This old dog rattle was collected by a friend of mine while in the Democratic Republic of Congo in the early 1990's. It was tied around the neck of the tribe's Ridgeback lion hunting dogs to alert them of the dogs presence as they don't bark but make low quiet guttural sounds.
I have never seen another even after all the years collecting African art.
There are 8 cowrie shells imbedded on the back side.
The patina is beautiful from years of handling.
The handle is leather but the rest is wood.
There is an engraved abstract design on the top of the heart shaped face.
It appears a lot of care went into carving this artifact.
I think the art of the Lega people is among the most beautiful across the continent.
Used by tribe. Very good condition.
11" H from top of handle to bottom of rattle
4.5" W
3" Deep
