We are geeks in my family. Our annual vacation is a trek to Dragon*Con - a HUGE science fiction and fantasy convention. We dress up in costumes and compete in the Masquerade. We play games until the wee hours of the morning. We go to panels to learn how to make wings and to listen to our favorite authors speak. We all have Jedi costumes. A long time ago (in a galaxy far, far away) I promised my husband that I'd make him an R2-D2 hat. I've really been enjoying Geek Crafts month over at the CRAFT blog and I realized that the time had come. As soon as I made The Basic Beanie, R2-D2 had to come next.

First - a warning. I know I specialize in patterns for beginners. But this is not a pattern for beginners. Or the faint of heart. There's a lot of fussy sewing and steps that will make you swear. I made things extra hard on myself by using tissue lame (I wanted my silver to be really shiny). In the pattern I show you a sneaky trick for making tissue lame more manageable - but if you choose to use it I'd still say this is an intermediate level pattern. If you choose a saner fabric - like a nice gray woven cotton - I'd say it's more of an advanced beginner pattern. If you've made The Basic Beanie successfully then you're ready to give this one a shot, but don't try this one first. Okay?

What you get:

* Full-sized pattern pieces designed to be used WITH The Basic Beanie pattern
* Complete instructions with loads of step-by-step photos (the pattern is 11 pages long)
* sizes for men, women, kids, and American Girl dolls (yes - even the doll size)

Materials you'll need: (in addition to those needed to make The Basic Beanie)

* 1/4 yard blue fabric - I used woven cotton, but felt would be easier to work with
* 1/4 yard fusible adhesive and white muslin (if you are using tissue lame)
* additional fusible adhesive or freezer paper (depending on the applique method you choose)
* One 1 1/8" button - any color
* scraps of black fabric
* tiny amount of stuffing

Skills you'll need: (in addition to those needed to make The Basic Beanie)

* hand sewing
* ladder stitch
* needle turn applique or applique with fusible adhesive

Time you'll need:

* a day or two

PLEASE NOTE - This pattern is designed to be used IN ADDITION to The Basic Beanie pattern. You need BOTH patterns for this project.

I'll email a link to download your PDF as soon as possible after your purchase. Please allow up to 24 hours - though I'm usually able to get it to you much sooner.
