This instrument sounds great, sort of a pleasant tropical melodic wooden chime. During times of rain, it still plays, but maybe not in the key it did in fair weather. No worries, as when the wood dries out, it goes right back in tune. *please note, that these are not tuned for an evening at the Philharmonic... They sound great, but if you really, really really need things to be exact, all the time, then this isn't your instrument.
While I am somewhat new to Etsy, I have been building these these benches for many years, so please order with confidence. I have built and shipped these all over the country yet I'm always excited when I meet new people who can think of a great place for one to live. I also build similar benches in the shape of a porch swing (no legs, chain supports) - Email me if that is of interest.
These benches are built to order. (photos are of a bench I built for a school in Boston) It depends on how busy the shop is, but I'd say three weeks is a safe turn around. If you are thinking of giving it as a gift, I can send you a glossy photograph of one, to tide them over until it arrives. (that usually works fine). People get pretty excited about these benches.
You get a pair of mallets with the purchase, and I'll sell you another pair for $25, if you want some spares. I make the mallets by hand, with a mold I constructed in the shop.
Check out my blog for other interesting musical projects coming out of my city rooftop woodshop. Or stop on by the next time you are in Portland, I'd love to show you around.
