Knit your own Icelandic Hyrna (Shawl)

Hyrnas have been knitted in Iceland for centuries and Icelandic women have worn them indoors and outdoors.

In this kit there are 5,2 oz of yarn in three colors. The yarn is hand dyed with natural colors from plants from the Icelandic nature. The Hyrna is very simple to make and might be good for beginners. The needles for the recipe are no 3,5 but the Icelandic yarn einband can handle smaller or larger needles. It is possible to mix the colors or use first one skein and then the next until the yarn is finished. It is common to start with the lighter color and use the dark one last (bottom). You start knitting the Hyrna at the neck. The hespa in the picture is from the same pattern but not the same colors.

It is not possible to obtain blue from the Icelandic nature. For many hundred years we have used imported Indígó from the plant of the genus Indigofera from Indía. So this is part of the Icelandic coloring tradition. HTe yellowish skein is from onionpeel (not from Icelandic nature) and the red wone is from madder root.

The Hespa yarn is colored by Gudrun Bjarnadottir. She teaches botany at the Agricultural University of Iceland and is interested in etnobotany and uses all her free time to collect plants and color the Icelandic einband. The yarn is called Hespa which is the word for skein in Icelandic.

Wash the Hyrna separately with luke warm water, just let it soak in the water and do not move it around to much. The wool has a natural ability to clean itself if it is given some time in the water. The color might leak in the water in small amounts but that should not be a problem if the Hyrna is washed alone.
The needles are not included.
