He was hand sculpted using white clay, then kiln fired to over 1800 degrees. He is hollow in the middle so that he's not quite as heavy as some of his more solid buddies.
His lead-free glaze coat protects him from the elements, while his eyes, mouth and teeth were hand painted by a personal friend. He was finished with a protective coat of varnish.
