Laser etched onto the fronts of states is the Interstate Highway System. It looks like a vascular or other kind of branching system. It also aids in completing the puzzle since the highways between neighboring states match.
Each of 47 pieces is a state (except for Michigan's Upper Peninsula…) and has a small magnet glued to its back to allow it to live in a vertical world.
The wood is hard, old-growth pine stolen from the termites in a collapsing barn along the banks of the Colorado River just outside of Austin, TX. It's got beautiful colors and patterns and aromas.
This puzzle features what I call a discontinuous grain pattern, meaning that the grain direction is unique for every piece. At the scale of the puzzle the grain lines look almost geological or even agricultural and their individuality shapes each state's identity.
Tiny Rhode Island and Delaware are etched onto larger adjoining states.
The puzzle for sale here is identical to the one pictured save for variations in the wood grain.
