Like a scene straight out of "The Arabian Nights" or a pre-Raphaelite painting, this antique button has exquisite detail, featuring a woman with draped gown and headscarf in a crescent moon shaped boat ~ perhaps sailing down the Nile river, surrounded by a frame of opulent arabesque filigree border. This large button measures approx. 1 7/16" in diameter, and is made from what appears to be a bronze colored metal, which has been embossed in a technique which created incredibly precise, fine details to the overall impression of the design. Wonderful for a collectors of special buttons and sewing ephemera or Orientalist art nouveau, popular in the Victorian era with its fascination of the exotic. The back of the button looks to be black japanned metal, and the looped shank on the reverse is in great shape, so the button could certainly be sewn an used as an accent on a hat, lapel, choker, or any other number of decorative possibilities.
