Our home was built in last years of the 19th century, during a booming time in our state's history. Coal was everything - livelihood for so many - and this key was there for all of it. During the great depression - did it turn on a furnace? I like to think it did, since our home survived the last century, and provided shelter to those who have gone before.
The cast iron key measures about 2 1/4" high and the top is about 2" wide. The bottom "key" is square shaped for fitting into the furnace.
It would be a great addition to your shadow box collection or altered arts project - it could even be used to make a mold for resin casts, paper clay casts, or candle casts.
