As you can imagine by the name, Red-billed seagulls have red bills. They also sport bright red feet and have the most striking white eyes. There is no escape from this gull in downtown Wellington. These dudes are feisty and have kind of a far off stare like they are in deep thought. When hanging out at the bay, I halfway expect the gull next to me to glance over and start up a conversation. Maybe I just need to make more friends.
This is a graphite, gouache, and watercolor work on 210x148mm (8.2x5.8in for you Americans) watercolor paper. It is painting #7 from my 30 Sketches Project V: 30 Flocks of New Zealand Birds. I welcome you to follow my progress by visiting www.30sketchesproject.blogspot.com.
