The flame figuring in the grain of this cherry wood makes this an exceptional piece because comparable quality wood is difficult to come by.
The place where a trunk splits or where a major branch leaves the trunk is called a crotch in the tree. There is a special way to cut the crotch wood of a tree to expose the flame figure. It requires blocking out the heart of the crotch with a chainsaw and then finishing the cuts with a band saw. A crotch may only yield enough material for one or two spoons. The figure and color in this piece is wonderful with the flame running up the entire length of the spoon.
The feeling of making a spoon like this is hard to describe. The process of a spoon emerging from a rough block of wood with its graceful sweeping lines laying in my hands continues to amaze me.
Note: The bowl in the photos is not included in the listing of this spoon.
As this flame figure cherry spoon was made to be used, I have sealed it with a food safe mixture of bees wax and mineral oil. A fine spoon should never be soaked in water or put into the dishwasher but rinsed off after use and resealed with mineral oil and wiped dry. Even used regularly, it can still be kept as an heirloom to be treasured for years to come.
