I love drawing illustrations that involve cats (I have three cats at home who make lovely models) and am always looking for ways to combine them with my love for books. This cat portrait is based on an iconic photograph of Edgar Allan Poe taken in 1848. I remember reading a lot of Poe's short stories in Middle School - oh the mysterious and macabre! - especially "The Gold Bug" and "The Cask of Amontillado."
I included on of Poe's famous lines from "The Raven" around the illustration's border.
The paper is hand cut white bristol board.
This piece measures approximately 5 inches x 7 inches (12.5cm x 17.5 cm). (I cut the bristol board by hand, so dimensions may vary slightly.)
Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered, weak and weary,
Over many a quaint and curious volume of forgotten lore,
While I nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a tapping,
As of some one gently rapping, rapping at my chamber door.
"'Tis some visitor," I muttered, "tapping at my chamber door --
Only this, and nothing more."
