"In the Sounds and Seas: Volume 1" is the first chapter of a six-part wordless, densely illustrated comic that tells the story of a woman’s consuming creative project, and what happens when that fails. In the style of ancient poems of myth and monsters, “In the Sounds and Seas” begins with an invocation to the singers of the story. The book opens with three figures sitting around a fire in the woods and, once filled with song, they open their mouths and the story bursts forth. Their songs weave together and blend, forming the world of the rest of the book.
