These are premium locks from a hogget fleece. Hogget is the first shearing of a young animal and is is the softest wool that sheep will ever produce. This is from a lovely Maine raised yearling Romney with beautiful crimp and sheen. There is almost no vegetable matter in this fleece and is has been carefully hand washed. If you have never processed your own fiber, but want to start with clean wool, this is a great way to try it for the first time.
These locks are super clean and the dry lamb tips were removed by the shepherd. It has a 4 inch staple length. .
Romney wool is a great fiber for beginner spinners. According to Deb Robson and Carol Ekarius in the newly published "Fleece & Fiber Sourcebook": "Romney is a reason all on it's own to learn to spin your own yarn, and the fiber is so amenable it will help you learn the craft."
Romney is one of my favorite wools for spinning and blending. These locks are so nice, I took a handful straight off the drying racks, teased open the locks by hand and spun them directly from the cloud. No carding needed!
