Amazing color play and a very rare phantom or ghost (as they are called at the mine). It happens when a layer of opal grows over another layer that was already formed. You can see the inside pattern surounded by another layer that is full of ghostly color patterns. This piece really stands apart even from other opals from that area. Unique specimen. High quality in every way.
Colors are very strong with green and plenty of yellow, blue and even red. Pictures cannot do it justice. It is much better in person.
Have the sunlight or light source above and behind you for best results and you'll be amazed at the 360 degree beauty of this piece.
The dome itself measures 7/8" thick by 2 5/8" long.
This type of opal usually cannot be cut or let to dry. For this reason it's best to keep the specimens in Glass domes constantly wet. They are generally for display only.
All opals have some water content. Some types and sizes are more stable than others. Because V.V. opals have high water content even in the opal world, if they air dry they can crack or "craze" but they will usually remain stable for generations if left in water.
This piece will be shipped very carefully and insured for the best chance of getting it to you safe.
Local pick-ups are always an option if you're able.
Shipping is $7.75 in the continental USA and includes Delivery confirmation and insurance via USPS priority mail. Please convo for rates elsewhere.
The ad is for the opal and dome. The dome is made of glass with a rubber stopper...
...The opal is made of mostly simple silica molecules arranged in a certain way by mother nature many millions of years ago. ;)
