“On a bright December morning long ago, two thinly clad children were kneeling upon the bank of a frozen canal in Holland.
The sun had not yet appeared, but the gray sky was parted near the horizon, and its edges shone crimson with the coming day. “
This beautifully illustrated vintage book of life in the Netherlands in the late 1800’s is a wonderful depiction of Dutch culture. The pen and ink and full color illustrations help to tell this story of honor and courage. The little Dutch boy who plugged the dike with his finger is introduced in these pages. This book also popularized Dutch speed skating in the U.S..
Condition: This book is in good condition for its age. The tulip printed cloth/board cover is in tact with just a little fraying on the corners and edges. The black and white pen and ink illustrations and color prints are crisp. The binding is in good condition with no lose pages. There is the typical yellowing of paper for a book this age. I have not found any pencil or pen marks, except for a small school stamp and marking on the front and back pages and on a couple of text pages.
As with any vintage book, this book has been well loved and read so expect some visible wear.
