I decided that since all I do is read late 18th to early 20th century fiction that I might as well start illustrating some of my favorites! I love Wilkie Collins and this image is inspired by "The Moonstone", his well known gothic mystery novel. Although the painting does not refer to a specific scene I tried to capture the feeling of apprehension this brunette Victorian woman might have had, walking down a corridor in a mansion at night, fingering the fabled Moonstone amulet and lighting her way with a candle. She wears a seafoam green dress buttoned up and with frilly white lace at the cuffs.
