I love ruffles and a feminine, flattering look in a shawl. The shape of this is very simple - pretty much a half-oval with the ruffle added to the lower edge. It covers your upper body, but the ends are narrow so they don't get in the way.
I designed this shawl to be done with 2 strands of very fine yarns, although just about any yarn will work. This one is done with a very fine kid mohair and a sport weight blend of cotton and rayon metallic to give it weight and drapability. It hangs beautifully and is long enough to keep you warm and stays on.
The shawl and ruffle are knit in stockinette stitch. The border is attached to the shawl with a slip crochet to keep the seam from stretching. Then, the entire piece is bordered with a row of backwards crochet after being stabilized with a row of slip crochet.
It’s really a very easy pattern and fun to do. And can also be easily adapted to different thicknesses of yarn and also different sizes.
Finished Size of the model is approximately 24½" deep by 75" along upper edge from point to point.
Yardage - Approximately 1,100 yards each of a Lace Weight Kid Mohair and a Thin Sport Weight Rayon, Cotton or Metallic blend
Gauge - 3¼ sts per inch
Needles - US Size 10.5 (6.5mm) 29" to 35" circular
