A note on materials: Having been stitching for 30 years, I only stitch on linen instead of the aida cloth found in most kits and often used by the beginner stitcher. The higher thread counts of linen (30 count means there are 30 stitches in an inch) gives it a lovely finish. Many of the linens are hand dyed and have a "vintage" look to them - and the threads are not necessarily uniform in width so they can look more rustic.
I use hand dyed silk or cotton flosses. Because they are hand dyed, the color is almost variegated at times, rather than a consistent color throughout. I just like the look much better and I think you will too!
