Part sand sculpture, part marine specimen, this 4-INCH paper Sandy Beach Sparkler Star Urchin ornament, based on the traditional Polish porcupine ball, is handmade using a lovely natural brown colored paper and hand-dipped point-by-point in fine, clean crafting sand to create an exquisite decorative accent right at home among traditional beach cottage and nautical home decor. Hang from a branch or on your Christmas tree among shells and other treasures from the sea; or include as part of a tablescape for elegant and inspired entertaining with an organic feel. Star Urchins are my modern interpretation of a Polish folk art decoration, a style of ornament making that dates back beyond a hundred years. To me, they look like stars or sea urchins, so I call them Star Urchins, but their spiky form has been likened to thistles and fireworks, too.

I make each Star Urchin completely by hand, and each of mine has 80 hand-formed points. My family has been making them for over half a century and my many years of practice produces a very neat ornament. They look delicate and celestial, take patience and a little while to make. Great to use anywhere you want to add an interesting conversation piece.

Each Star Urchin is packaged in a clear box for storage or gift giving and has a loop for hanging.
