The front latch is gear-shaped, and drives an internal mechanism to clasp the box shut -- just rotate the front gear a about a quarter-turn clockwise to unlatch the box, and counter-clockwise to latch it. Inside the box, none of this mechanism is visible (except the "hook" on the lid).

Inside the box, black felt covers the bottom and sides of the interior, adding a nice soft feel and slightly padding anything placed inside to help prevent scratching.
The box is made primarily from hardboard painted with acrylic paint, then very slightly distressed to give it a warm, polished look. The gear patterns are multi-layered, using both laser-engraving and -cutting to give a pleasing depth to the exterior appearance.
Brass & bronze rivets and hinges contribute to the steampunk theme, with unobtrusive clear acrylic used in two places: for the lid latch mechanism, and to contain the planetary gears on the exterior lid. The underside of the box is engraved with our company name, copyright date, and website URL.
Interior dimensions: 7 7/8" long x 5 7/8" wide x 3 3/8" deep. Coin pictured inside is a US quarter; shown next to the box is a 6" ruler.
Exterior dimensions: 8 1/2" long x 6 7/8" wide x 4 3/8" tall. Measurements include farthest-protruding edges (hinges in back, feet on the bottom, etc).
Shipping is by USPS Priority (or Priority International), and all orders are shipped on or before the next business day after the order is placed. Though delivery time for Priority is not guaranteed, our experience suggests it's likely you'll be holding your new box within 2-4 days of placing your order. (Within the US, international transit time varies more widely by country)
