To clean gourd shell: Put gourds in a bowl of water for a minute or two- hot or at least warm water loosens the outer skin more quickly than room temp. Adding a cap-full of bleach is optional. You may want to weigh them down with a plate. Use a metal scrubby and gently rub in a circular motion until they are clean. Rubbing too hard may create scratches. Rinse, let dry and you're all set.
TIP: After cleaning, sand the shell with 400 or 600 grit sandpaper for a glassy smooth finish- if you choose to paint them, the paint will glide on beautifully!
