This grit is silicon carbide, an extremely hard-wearing abrasive used for polishing metal. In a needle-cushion, it will leave your needles silky smooth, deburred and grease free.
This should be enough for several small strawberry emeries - you only need to half-fill your emery with grit, topping up the rest with wadding. You may want to sew the grit into a little bag before putting it into your needle-cushion as this will slow the inevitable loss of grit from your needle-cushion.
