A really cute little bird house, slab built, and carefully carved to resemble clapboard siding, and slate. Overall outer dimensions are 10 1/2" tall to the peak of the roof, and 4 1/2" wide, not including the roof. Cone 10, high fire stoneware, glazed on the exterior, unglazed interior. The clapboard is glazed white, but as this is on a dark clay, it comes out sort of a semi translucent gray, reminiscent of old, weathered buildings. The roof has multicolored "slates" in tones of green, blackish, and brown. Safe for year round, freeze/thaw, outdoor use. There are holes in the bottom for drainage, and a hole in the bottom center for a mounting screw (brass screw included). Cleverly designed roof slides on and off for cleaning.

This bird house is designed with the proper dimensions to attract Black-capped or Carolina Chickadees. Both are common backyard birds throughout much of the United States and Canada. They are easy to attract, and will readily nest in bird houses. I believe this house should also be suitable for the Mountain Chickadee of the western US and Canada, Chestnut-backed of the Pacific Northwest, and the Mexican Chickadee--but I have no personal experience with these species. There are also small birds of Europe like the Great Tit, Tree Sparrow, and Pied Flycatcher that might find a perfect nesting place here. Interior dimensions: The hole is about 1 3/16" wide. The interior diameter is about 4" from front to back, and a bit less from side to side. Height of hole above floor about 6 1/4", and total interior height is about 9 1/4".

This house can be mounted at any time of year. Mounted now, in late summer, it will become a part of the landscape, and in colder climates, birds may use it for refuge on cold winter nights. To attract for 2012, it's best to get it out in late winter, no later than late February or early March, in time for nesting season.

Looks especially good with a house that has white siding (as does mine) as it coordinates nicely. Colors are somewhat muted, so it can gracefully conform to any surroundings.
