Invented in the late 19th century, these jars were revolutionary in that they kept the food from coming into any contact with any metal, preventing contamination. The wire clamps also made the lids easy and quick to remove, hence the "lightning" name.
The Atlas E-Z Seal is a variation of the lightning seal jar already described. The Hazel-Atlas Glass Company, maker of the E-Z Seal jar, was in business from the late 1800s until 1964.
These jars are in fantastic condition. The bails have rusted (see photo), but they only add to the charm of these beautiful containers. Bind the three in a strap of burlap or vintage lace for a gorgeous centerpiece or convert them to outdoor lanterns. Or use these jars to store marbles, buttons, garden markers, nails, pencil, thread spools - the possibilities are endless. Enjoy!!
These jars measure 7 1/2" tall, almost 12 1/2" in diameter, with a mouth opening of 2 1/4". They are also embossed on the base - two read "2 A" and one reads "5 A". Please convo me if you wish to see more photos.
