Originally cookie jars were simply glass jars with metal lids, but in the late '30s, pottery manufacturers began offering a range of designs, from figural to whimsical. Shawnee patented the Puss 'n' Boots design mid-40s. I bought this one in the late '70s and have only used it for display since. As I'm now decluttering, I've decided it's time to let the piece bless someone else's home.
It was made sometime mid-century, probably '40's to '50's, by the Shawnee Pottery company out of Zanesville, Ohio. Two styles were made: long-tail and short-tail. This one's the less common long-tail version, which makes it worth a bit more. It's in excellent condition with no paint loss, no chips, no cracks. It has only a few minor discolorations on the bottom that I've not tried to clean. (Check out all the pictures. I've shown the bottom of the piece, as well as where the top and bottom come together.)
The cookie jar stands 10 1/4" (26 cm) tall and is marked Patented Puss n Boots U.S.A on the bottom. It's guaranteed to be an original Shawnee piece.
