The comb is made in flexible lightweight celluloid in a faux tortoiseshell effect and has a distinctive openwork decoration showing a vase of flowers set within an oval medallion. This is placed against a classic background of lattice and scrollwork.
These combs make excellent accessories for weddings, pageants, re-enactments or fancy dress. Smaller versions are also suitable for various forms of Spanish dance such as Flamenco or Salsa.
This comb is suitable for those who would like a less exaggerated effect to the mantilla veil, as seen on the mannequin.
This comb is of the type known as a Spanish or mantilla comb because it resembles the traditional tortoiseshell ornaments worn by Spanish ladies with their native dress. In this tradition a beautiful lace scarf, white for unmarried women and black for married, was draped over a high comb which was made of beautifully carved tortoiseshell. The mantilla is a traditional Spanish garment, which has a special significance in Andalusia. In Holy Week it became a tradition that ladies dressed in black clothes, wearing a tortoiseshell Peinita and a black lace mantilla. These clothes were worn for visiting churches and for processions.
