This tiny blank journal was hand-bound using a super-strong medieval sewn-on-cords structure in which the pages are sewn onto cords that lace right into the cover boards and give the spine its old-world raised-cord look.
The pages are a nice heavy text-weight paper called "Classic Laid" for its traditional laid-finish texture. It's a pleasing pale cream color and can take any type of pen from ballpoint to fountain pen to dip-pen (and I have tried them all).
The cover is bound in deep blue goat leather on the spine and gold-finished textured decorative paper on the boards. The nautilus is printed from a hand-cut rubber block, then hand-printed and embossed in silver. The endpapers are a mottled blue handmade paper with gold marbling.
The Nautilus Specimen book comes housed in its custom porthole tin. This was made from a recycled tea tin, embellished with faux rivets and lined with midnight blue velvet. A wide black satin ribbon has been attached to facilitate removing the book from the tin, as it fits quite snugly. The bottom of the tin is covered in gold paper with a engraved-look texture and has a nautilus that matches that on the cover of the book. It measures 3.5 inches across by 1.75 inches high.
This book is signed and dated by the artist on the last page, and while I may make similar books in future, none will be quite like this one.
