I bought a small parcel of these fantastic, glowing rainbow moonstones from a stonecutter in India. They are absolutely gorgeous, and are very difficult to photograph. I have included a photo of one of these stones in my hand, to give you an idea of the blue that goes through each of them. I only have five of them left.
I chose them for their high level of pearly and opalescent lustre. These stones really shimmer, due to the way in which Indian moonstone is formed. Moonstone is made of two feldspar minerals. The two species are intermingled. Then, as the newly formed mineral cools, the intergrowth of the two minerals separates into stacked, alternating layers. When light falls between these thin, flat layers, it scatters in many directions producing the phenomenon called adularescence.
This adularescence effect is very difficult to photograph, but is quite something to see in real life. I have tried diligently to show the adularescence in my photos, but have missed the mark somewhat- this stone has much more colourplay in real life. The photo of the unset stone sitting in my hand is a good indicator of its true appearance. The colours are gold, cobalt blue, and turquoise blue. It is mesmerizing to turn your finger in the light and see how the colours flash across the stone.
The ring is built of a fine and sterling silver bezel, and a sterling silver ring band. The band is 3/8" across, and has a half-round profile. I have a number of these moonstones, all around 25-28mm long and 15-17mm across.
