To make this piece I roll out a sheet of white earthenware clay, cut out the outline of the platter, and actively shape the sheet to form the raised sides. After firing the clay I brush the glaze on the piece in several layers, and then glaze fire it. My studio sign, BFP, is hand-written in glaze on the back as proof of my handiwork. A thin area at the underside of this piece is unglazed (see second photo).
Great piece for serving appetizers, pastries, sandwiches. If you clamp this platter into a wire plate hanger you get a nice wall decoration. When displayed in an easel (as photographed) you get a decorative item for your bookshelf, or fireplace mantle.
Size: 14 inches long, 9 inches wide, 1 inch tall at the edges. Food safe, and dishwasher-safe.
Why care about the great white shark? The great white shark has an impressive size (over 20 feet), and even more impressive swimming capacity (specimens have been tracked to swim from South Africa to Australia, and back in nine months). This shark is one of the most voracious predators of the oceans; its diet includes seals, sea lions, tuna, and birds. Although great whites may attack small boats, you can safely cage dive with great whites in the Baja, and in Australia, and South Africa.
The great white shark is more endangered than tigers. It is one of the biggest challenges of our time to save the great white from extinction, because we still know relatively little about this magnificent predator.
