I love making these types of soft sculptures because I am inspired by organic, repeating shapes found in nature... barnacles, coral, fungus, clusters of seed pods. This piece is part of a series based on natural shapes. Using traditional crochet techniques to create modern, abstract designs is so enjoyable and the time consuming technique becomes a meditation as I form each part of the project. I made this complex piece by hand crocheting individual "pods" and "corals" then arranging them on a wooden base. All of my bases are found at secondhand stores so each one is unique and has its own character.
The mostly monochromatic turquoise color palette is fresh and contemporary. I added a shock of color with the large, coiled "coral" piece. It includes lime green, turquoise and amber crochet thread.
This particular wood base has decorative metal hanger on the top and a hole in the back as a second hanging option.
Measures approximately 8.5 x 9.5 inches (19 x 24 cm).
The turquoise yarn I used is a very soft, high quality cotton. The crochet thread is mercerized cotton from Turkey.
These pieces are stunning when grouped together, so check out my other art for sale: http://www.etsy.com/shop/cornflowerbluestudio?section_id=7543061
