They are wheel-thrown and made of mid-fire porcelain. The exterior is a matte sage green glaze and the interior of the bowl features a grasshopper, painted in black underglaze with clear glaze. Each grasshopper is painted by hand using a graphite transfer process.
In China grasshoppers thought to contain the reincarnated souls of ancestors. They mostly hop, but can jump as far as 20 times their own length. They have 5 eyes, which allow them to see long distances, but also forwards, backwards & sideways. They are associated with happiness, good luck, good health, patience.
All my pieces are food, microwave and dishwasher safe, though they prefer hand washing.
This design is part of an open edition collection. Currently I have 6 sets in stock. The piece pictured may not necessarily be the piece you receive. As with most handmade work slight variations are natural.
