The wood is walnut, the shelf itself is two edge jointed panels supported by galvanized wire, stops, and turnbuckles. There are two smaller walnut strips involved in the action as well, one supports the shelf from the bottom, while the other anchors the wire from the top. The top piece is carved and shaped by hand.
The walnut is sealed with a low gloss tung oil finish.
