Nålbinding is a textile technique that uses a single, eyed, needle to create fabric by sewing non-continuous lengths of thread in a fashion that in its most basic form is a series of buttonhole stitches and in more complex forms are threaded together. It is sometimes described as "single needle knitting" or "cross knit looping." The resulting fabric is generally built spiraling up row by row and can be very elastic or quite stiff depending on the variation and material used.
The oldest known samples of single-needle knitting include color-patterned sandal socks of the Coptic Christians of Egypt (4th century CE), and hats and shawls from the Paracas and Nazca cultures in Peru, dated between 300 BCE and 300 CE
