I started with a pendant of circular netting in pale ivory seed beads, which resembles a spider web. Branches of dark brown beaded fringe are woven throughout the netting, and end in dangles of black and white skull beads, a patterned wood tube bead, and brightly colored African Christmas beads.
The collage pendant is suspended from a simple beaded chain with shiny jet black seed beads, and a repeating pattern of vintage dark topaz glass beads, brown horn glass beads with ivory accents, and more rough cut Christmas beads in colors like red, yellow, green and blue. The brown horn beads are bordered with loops of brown seed beads that match the branched fringe in the pendant. I have finished the necklace with a beaded button and loop clasp in matching colors.
Dimensions: The pendant is 6.5 cm (2.6 inches) long, and 3 cm (1.2 inches) wide. The necklace chain is 49 cm (19.3 inches) long, including the clasp. The beaded button measures 1.6 cm (0.6 inches) across.
The eclectic mixture of bead shapes and colors in this necklace, combined with the skulls and spider web netting give this necklace a fun and spooky quality. It would make a great addition to a Halloween costume.
Materials used in this design include high quality Japanese glass seed beads, Czech pressed glass beads, vintage Czech glass, and African trade beads, or love beads. These collectible beads were manufactured in the Czech Republic and Venice, then traded and used in Nigeria and Ghana, before being restrung and sold to bead merchants. The trade beads used in this piece were gently washed with water to bring out their shine and color.
