Make American geography fun and beautiful with this one of a kind laser cut map puzzle made from stained birch plywood. Each piece is a state and has a small magnet glued to its back to allow it to live in a vertical world.
The puzzle looks great on your refrigerator or other magnetically receptive surface.
Each state's capital is indicated by a tiny star cut through. Etched on the back of each piece is the state's two letter abbreviation.
Each region is stained differently to distinguish it from the others. The six regions include:
Pacific Region: WA, OR, CA, AK, HI
Mountain Region: ID, NV, UT, MT, CO, WY, AZ
Southwest Region: NM,TX, OK
Southeast Region: AR, LA, MS, AL, GA, FL, SC, NC, TN, KY, VA
Middle West Region: ND, SD, NE, KS, MN, IA, MO, WI, IL, IN,MI, OH, WV
Northeast Region: MD, DL, PA, NJ, NY, CT, MA, RI, NH, VT, MA
With three exceptions, each of the 48 pieces is a state. Michigan's Upper Peninsula is a piece (but not a state). Rhode Island, Connecticut and Massachusetts are combined into one piece with etched lines showing the borders. The same goes for Delaware and Maryland.
This puzzle features a discontinuous grain pattern, meaning that the grain direction is unique for each piece. At the scale of the puzzle the grain lines look almost geological or even agricultural and their individuality adds to each state's identity.
In order to achieve differently stained regions, I made this puzzle by mixing and matching six puzzles, each stained differently. The puzzle for sale here is identical to the one pictured with the exception that its regions will be a different combination of the same six stain colors.
