~Lovely Handwoven Antique French Gathering Basket~
I have, in the years we have been living here in France, collected a number of old locally handmade baskets from our area of France, as well as examples of the local antique and vintage pottery and such, but I really do love the baskets best.
Maybe that is because baskets are woven, like fabric.
And I do use them. I take them into my garden and fill them with flowers and vegetables.
In any event I think the ones I see here are so beautiful, and so I buy them whenever I can...and now I've just got too many, so I'm putting a few of my collection in the shop...
This basket comes from the Charente region of France, where we live, and
was likely used for gathering eggs, nuts, mushrooms, berries or maybe tomatos from the garden just moments before serving them in this rural farming area.
Each region had its own typical handmade country basket styles... I have identified about 5 or 6 general 'types' in our region but there are endless variations because each basket maker had his or her own particular way of weaving and interpreting the general local 'style'.
And the styles of baskets where we live in the south west are very different in style from those in other areas of the country..
This fine old basket was hand woven of splints with a bentwood handle and is of a shallow and slightly double-lobed shape which is similar to old baskets I remember seeing in North Carolina where I grew up. I particularly like the way the sides of this basket 'sweep up' to the middle...this I find to be innocent and uncontrived elegance of line and form,
This basket is in superb antique condition with only a few tiny breaks in the splints
It is sturdy and entirely usable.
It was likely made around the late 1800s to early 1900s.
Maybe you will use it to gather beans, parsley or roses from your own garden!
But it would be charming hanging up in a French country kitchen or for holding kitchen towels or magazines...
This large and lovely old French basket measures
21 inches lengthwise, 13 inches across at the handle and is 9 1/2 inches high including bentwood handle.
A wonderful country-French accent for your home.
