Lapis Lazuli, September, alternate birthstone is combined with aragonite and silver plate beads to form a necklace with a porcelain pendant. The pendant has a beautiful painting of a child holding a Chinese lantern. A carnelian bead accents the pendant.
This is a casual piece of jewelry, perfect for a pair of jeans and a t-shirt, or turtle neck sweater.
Lapis Lazuli was highly prized by the Babylonians and Egyptians. King Tutankhamen’s tomb was filled with jewelry and other treasures covered with the deep blue precious gemstone. It was also used to make ultramarine blue during the Renaissance. The next time you see a painting by Michelangelo, da Vinci, Botticelli, or Rafael, look at the deep incredibly gorgeous ultramarine blue in the robes and sky. That’s ground lapis, mixed with oils and other substances to make the paint.
The necklace measures 17 ½ inches. The painted porcelain pendant is 1 7/8 inches by 1 ¼ inches. The necklace is finished with a 4 inch silver plate extender chain and a silver plate lobster clasp.
