These songs use anywhere from 3 to 16 chimes per song, and many include harmonies!
A word on pitch (for you true-blue music lovers):
We went through a lot of trouble to accurately tune the chimes because we wanted to true them up with a scale that would allow them to be played in concert with other instruments.
The chimes were pitched by measuring the frequency of a tuned piano's notes, and then by adjusting the length of each chime until the frequency matched within 1 Hz. Slight variations in length as well as the thickness of the walls of the chimes account for a small (+- ~1Hz) margin of error, but it isn't audibly different from tuned instruments playing the same note.
Interesting note - we discovered that both the placement of the hole through which the holding string passes and the material of the string itself significantly affect the timbre of the musical notes. A mechanical engineer developed a formula for the placement of the hole as a function of the length of the chime. The best string material we found through simple trial and error. :)
There are 20 chimes, chromatically spaced every half step from B flat through F on the next octave up.
