These OOAK earrins are extremely lightweight, about 2 inches in length, and can be made on sterling or 14k gold-filled earwires/posts, just let me know which you prefer at the time of purchase. I can also make multiple sets or matching pendants and other accessories, for bridal parties and other special groups.
The average life span of a Monarch is 2-6 wks, and there are 4 generations in a calendar year. Amazingly, the 4th generation lives up to 8 months!! This is the Generation which makes the transcontinental migration to the state of Michoacan, Mexico, to roost in the Oyamel Fir Groves; Each year they return to the SAME trees and they actually hibernate! (http://www.monarchbutterflyusa.com/Cycle.htm) The LaCruz Habitat project in Michoacan has made amazing headway with local peoples and the land itself, employing people to protect the trees rather than log them, and replanting the Oyamel Fir which has been reduced by over-logging. A recently new threat to this beautiful animal, is corn which has been genetically modified to carry a toxic weed killer (herbacide) within its very DNA. ( For purposes of not wanting to be sued, I am leaving out the name of the company and the weed killer.) Corn and milkweed plants often cohabitate, and the corn pollen mingles with the milkweed pollen, thereby passing along those genetic qualities - like weed killer - the monarch caterpillar eats only milkweed in the beginning of its life...This type of weed killer is apparently not that good for caterpillars either. This is the same corn we eat in our cereals, dinners, and more. Just food for thought. (http://organicconsumers.org)
You won't find another one like this anywhere else in the world! Even though these are simple, they were made with uncommon care and good thought, and will make a very special gift for yourself or someone else.
5% of the monies received from your purchase will be donated to a charity/ies of our choice at the end of every month. We support projects that do good for the Earth and her inhabitants, people too!
Our butterflies and dragonflies were either found after they'd passed, or come from sanctuaries & sustainable butterfly farms - which educate others, protect the indigenous forests, and provide honest wages for the native people. The butterfly wing jewelry is not susceptable to UV damage. It has been protected by a plastic encasement process, so it is very durable - although it is not recommended that it be submerged or stored in areas of high humidity.
