I've often been envious of the Mexican holiday Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead). Not only is it a super cool way to honor and celebrate the loved ones who have moved on from this life, but it's full of really cool skull and skeleton imagery!
Dia de los Muertos is a two day Mexican holiday that is celebrated on November 1st and 2nd. Families honor their departed loved ones by setting up alters complete with ofrendas (offerings) for the deceased. Families also bring ofrendas of food, trinkets and even tequila to cemeteries where they clean and decorate their loved one's grave sites. Making skulls out of sugar and festively decorating them is one of the traditional activities of Dia de los Muertos. Sugar skulls can be enjoyed by both the living and the dead.
Here are some male and female sugar skull designs that I have hand painted on a brilliant red mug!
IMPORTANT NOTE: The photos you see here are from mugs I have made before. Your design will be ONE OF A KIND and DIFFERENT from these pictures. If you want a specific design you see here then please let me know what picture you like and I will try to recreate it the best I can. Even if you do tell me that you want a specific design your mug will differ from the picture as each is hand painted.
I also have sugar skull mugs in yellow, green and blue as seen in the last two photos. You can find these listed in my shop:
I get plain white mugs at a charity thrift store and I hand decorate them with porcelain paint. The paint is non toxic is permanently adhered to the mug with heat.
I can personalize this mug with a name or some other text for $2.00 more. Just send me a message and I'll adjust the price. If you have any special requests, just let me know and I'll see if I can make them happen!
This mug is microwave and dishwasher safe. However the image may last longer if you hand wash the mug. If you do decide to hand wash the mug avoid using abrasive cleaners or scrubbers, as they may scrape the image. A soft dish cloth would work best.
