Each of my san “knee” clauses is hand-carved from a single locally harvested cypress knee. Smaller knees with interesting shapes and personalities make for one-of-a-kind san “knees”. Each one starts with a unique shape in the knee. For example, a hump might become a crooked nose, or a twisted part at the top might become a part of his hat. I carve the san “knee” using a knife, then rub one coat of linseed oil on the carved knee and paint it with diluted paint. Some san “knees” are painted using oil based paints and others have acrylic paint. After the paint dries, I spray a clear sealer on the painted san “knee”, antique it, and reseal. All carvings are signed, dated and numbered.
