Heater shields were a late medieval adaptation of the kite shields used by Norman soldiers during the Battle of Hastings in 1066 and can be seen depicted in the Bayeux Tapestry. The lighter and more manageable form allowed for easier maneuvering on the battlefield and developed into specialized shields for jousting in the 15th century.
