I believe the original date of this piece to be 1895, with later alterations.
It really is such an amazing landscape of jewel toned fabrics!: velvet and silk; brocade, patterned and plain. Lots of herringbone stitch and embroidered floral motifs. Some initials and the date September '95, a 'Merry Christmas" greeting and an embroidered owl!
The quilt measures 62" by 69" and is made up of forty two 8.5 inch squares with a 5 inch chestnut brown border all round. The original quilt top measures 52" by 58". I believe that the velvet border and quilt back were added at a later date, perhaps in the 1930's or 1940's. The velvet border has white outline stitch embroidery with motifs of an acorn and flowers to the corners. The quilt back is a parchment colored ticking fabric with pink wool tufts in very good shape. The batting is cotton or possibly wool.
The condition of the quilt is good for its age: some shredding and shattering to the more delicate silks, but overall it remains a beautiful example of this style of quilting.
