A gentleman and a lady hold a dreamy twilight tryst in this lovely Victorian illustration of 1846 by Daniel Maclise and F.P. Becker.
The original black-and-white engraving is long out of copyright and in the public domain. I've remixed it with a modern twist by digitally hand-painting it, which took me around 8-10 hours.
And to complement the enchanting imagery, I've incorporated John Keats' beautiful 1820 poem Bright Star: "Bright star, would I were stedfast as thou art— / Not in lone splendour hung aloft the night / And watching, with eternal lids apart, / Like nature's patient, sleepless Eremite, / The moving waters at their priestlike task / Of pure ablution round earth's human shores, / Or gazing on the new soft-fallen mask / Of snow upon the mountains and the moors / No—yet still stedfast, still unchangeable, / Pillow'd upon my fair love's ripening breast, / To feel for ever its soft fall and swell, / Awake for ever in a sweet unrest, / Still, still to hear her tender-taken breath, / And so live ever—or else swoon to death."
This pretty print is perfect for the 21st-century lover of 19th-century art and poetry. It would look wonderful on the wall of a neo-Victorian parlor, romantic boudoir, or steampunk study.
