:: Whether this antique and large trunk belonged to a couple of starry-eyed romantic travelers or one person who took a first-class trip from Italy to New York to emigrate or to sight-see, this trunk most certainly has a story. Manufacturer's label reads Giuseppe Gazzarrini located at Via Porta Rossa 13 in Florence, Italy (a store that is still there today, more details on the store's history below) and it is most likely from the 30s or 40s but could be earlier 1900s.

:: Travel sticker on the side of the trunk shows that the arrival location was New York, via "Prima Classe", and the name of the passenger (signor) seems to be Li Citturter. The date and ship name is too difficult to read to make out but seems to be written on the label. Extremely nice details all throughout with brass detailing allover, fully intact leather side strap handles, and a very distinctive painting of the canvas. Other materials seem to be wood and parchment. Conditionally speaking, the exterior is in good shape with little amount of damage (some slight chipping of the wood in some areas and light scratching / markings on the surface) while the interior shows signs of water damage and staining as you can see in picture #5. The front latch does not lock or have any area where you can add a padlock.

:: This particular shop called Gazzarrinis is now considered a historical shop in Florence. Here's the story on the makers from a website about historical locations in the Italian city: "Until the beginning of the Nineteenth century, in Porta Rossa, at number 13, now 71/72R, was located a shop for production and commerce of saddles and suitcases. In 1911, Giuseppe Gazzarrini, who worked there bought the firm, and specialized in suitcases. The Gazzarrinis, continued with the business in the same place for four generations, with an always renewed commitment. In the Twenties, the firm attended national and international exhibits, with important recognition for the productions’ quality. Despite the 1966 flood damage, the Gazzarrini family activity carried on, so much so, that the firm was the first in Florence to introduce 'rigid suitcases', an American novelty. The fine leather sector, traditionally a quality sector, has its own standing among the best Italian products for the accuracy of the craftsmanship."

:: An incredibly unique and rare piece of Italian history that made it all the way to New York and speaks to the days of traveling by ship of another time.
