Well dressed gentlemen of the later 1800's and early 1900's needed a collar button to fasten both their hard and soft collars. The typical shirt of the day was made without a collar and a man would have several collars in differing widths and styles and adorned them with fanciful buttons as their budget would allow. It was also a popular gift item at the time.
The lovely engraved padlock measures 1/2 inch across 5/8 inch tall with a 3/8 inch back button. It is only marked Pat May on the shank. The shank is gold filled steel as per magnet. Both button portions are non reactive to a magnet. Great condition, has been used as evidenced by the wear on the back button.
Wonderful collectible button perfect for a period dress costume or as an authentic part of a Steampunk collection. Would be an awesome wedding gift for a bridegroom to show his heart is now locked.
