Just as we were leaving empty-handed, I spotted this little beast hanging in the fireplace. Having never seen anything like it or any price on it. I called over the sale manager and asked about it. He must have been distracted, because after he gave us the history of "devil dampers" he ran off without giving us a price. We went to the checkout and it was our lucky day....the lady there said it was creeping her out and took a very reasonable offer just to get rid of it!
So here he is....over one pound of gorgeously aged bronze evil. He's looks as much a satyr as a devil...furry bottom half, hooves, massive muscles and some serious horns. He's 6 inches tall from hoof to horn and 5 inches wide from fist to fork. The chain is heavy, 14 inches longand attaches to one hand and one hoof. He's easy to hang in your own fireplace (as you can see ours in the first picture.) No fireplace? No problem....he is happy to hang just about anywhere.
About reproductions....in our research we did come across a few Victorian era items. But we also found reproductions...very cheap mass-produced ones. We have not taken this to Antiques Road Show, but based on the quality of items in the sale, the heft, the patina and the price, we are fairly certain this is the real deal.
If YOU purchase this and find it is not authentic in the opinion of an expert who will provide a note letting us know, we will gladly take him back and refund your money. We're that sure. We've seen two of these sold at auction, one for $225 and one for $550.
