Now in November by Josephine Johnson, printed in 1935
Johnson, who recieved the 1935 Pulitzer for this, her first book, was an American novelist, poet, and essayist; she wrote this novel in her mother's attic in Missouri and went on to write several other novels, poetry books, and essay compilations. She married and had three children, then after a full, literature filled life, died at the ripe age of 79.
"Now in November" depicts the life changes for a middle-class urban family turned poverty stricken by the Great Depression. Written much in the style of "Ethan Frome", this small, fictional glimpse into the life of one family is filled with isolation, grief, and hard times that were very much the reality for many during that period in history. At the time of it's publishing, it was praised as a mature work and point of view, surprisingly coming from a mid-twenties woman.
