Set of six pictures, in black-painted wood frames with thin plastic instead of glass. Each measures approximately 4 1/2" (11.4cm) x 5 3/4" (14.6cm).
Gerda Christoffersen worked in pastels, and created these "Papoose" pictures between 1950-1969. Born in Denmark, Christoffersen emigrated to Canada with her family. In her teens, as a creative young artist, she originated her unique artistic interpretations of the papoose. Gerda Christoffersen was already an acclaimed and professional artist when she came to New Mexico as a young woman. Here, immersed in the tragic history and tribal lore of our Southwest Indians, the artist devoted the subsequent years to portraying both the pathos and pride of those people.
Each has a hanger on the back to make a grouping on the wall, or would also look adorable on a desk or dresser.
