Elephants are intelligent, social and sensitive creatures.. They are symbols of royalty, power and grandness, and are one of the Seven Treasures of Buddhism . The elephant headed God Ganesh, is the remover of obstacles. An elephant image with trunk pointed upwards means good luck. This is only a fraction of lore regarding this amazing creature.

My elephant pieces came into being when a friend sent me a postcard from Thailand with an image of an elephant sculpture on it. I have made hundreds of elephants since then. When I put their eyes in place they come alive for me. They make me happy!

Totemic art depicts the creatures that inhabit our world with us. Also known as effigies, totems invoke the spirit of the form depicted, bringing its presence closer and honoring its wisdom. These tiny treasures are my offering to the totemic lineage.

This piece was first turned on the wheel, and then hand sculpted and carved. When the clay was "leather hard" it was hand polished over a series of hours with a smooth piece of agate. After drying, it was fired twice, first in an electric kiln followed by a final firing in an earth kiln with sawdust and twigs. The variations of color on the surface are the result of the dance of fire and smoke in the earth kiln. Each piece has an unpredictable and unique patina. And every opening of the kiln brings new variations and surprises. The eyes are small hematite beads. Burnished pieces are not suited for holding water or soil. Kept indoors they will maintain their sheen and beauty indefinitely.
